Beargrease Marathon: Isabella’s McClelland in lead heading into second checkpoint

Isabella’s Peter McClelland was in the lead of the 36th annual John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon as of 8 p.m. Sunday. On his heels were Martin Massicotte of Saint-Tite, Quebec, Canada, and Ryan Anderson of Cushing, Wis. McClelland was southwest of the second checkpoint in Finland.

According to Beargrease’s live tracking, Finland’s Blake Freking maintained a wide lead out the gate, then was passed by Ryan Redington of Skagway, Alaska, and Keith Aili of Ray, Minn. Redington led the way into the first checkpoint at Highway 2.

The race started at Billy’s bar in Duluth at 11 a.m. Sunday; 14 teams were registered. Marathon teams are expected to begin arriving at the finish in Grand Portage early Wednesday morning.

Beargrease 120 teams are expected to arrive at the finish at the Trestle Inn in Lake County early Monday morning.
