As we all know that the food that we eat passes through the esophagus which is a tube that connects the throat with the stomach. Sometimes due to human carelessness a sore known as esophageal ulcer is formed. This is a type of peptic ulcer that is located in the lower part of the esophagus, the junction where the esophagus and stomach meet.
Esophageal Ulcers, Causes
The reason behind the occurrence of this peptic ulcer is the existence of a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori. The erosion caused by the stomach acid can however be a cause to this. The medical treatments are available and along with lifestyle changes, this can be cured completely.
Symptoms of Esophageal Ulcers
When does one come to know about this disease. Well, there are visible symptoms like burning pain in the chest along with the ones that include:
Lack of appetite
Difficulty in swallowing
Earlier it was believed that the consumption of spicy food or even stress is the root cause, however this is not true, these worsen the case but are solely not responsible. The bacteria commonly known as H. Pylori is what causes esophageal ulcers. This bacteria is responsible for making the damage to the mucosal lining of the esophagus. A chronic condition which is known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can also lead to esophageal ulcers. People who suffer from GERD often have acid reflux which is when the stomach content moves back to the esophagus. Smoking, alcohol consumption, use of drugs such as ibuprofen can also damage the lining of the esophagus leading to formation of esophageal ulcers. Certain pills such as potassium, if not taken with sufficient water can cause such ulcers.
Treatment and Recovery Tips:
If the ulcer is caused by the bacteria, then the bacteria killing pills can be successful in treatment. If the reason is the medication, so it’s preferred to stop the consumption of the NSAIDS. Antifungal or Antibacterial medicines can also be prescribed depending on the cause of the medicine.
The visible effects of the treatment start reducing the symptoms, however proper course of the medication should be completed along with sufficient amount of water. Certain lifestyle changes should also be observed, like:
Sufficient amount of sleep
Consumption of fruits
Increased frequency of meals with lesser quantity
Adequate amount of water consumption
Diet recommendation for Esophageal Ulcers
Along with the medication, the doctors also suggest to make changes in the diet plans. This basically includes increasing the consumption of fiber, fruits and vegetables. Some helpful food recommendations are oats, whole grains, nuts, fruits, vegetables, flax seeds etc. On the other hand, some food items should be strictly avoided, like coffee, soda, chocolate, alcohol, citrus fruits, spicy food, oily, greasy, fried items.
Thus, esophageal ulcers forming in the junction of the stomach and the esophagus can be a result of the bacterial infection and along with proper medication, lifestyle changes can be helpful to a great extent to prevent the medical condition.
