Back in 2016 ASICS released the 7th version of their flagship racing flat, the ASICS Gel Hyper Speed 7. Its simplistic design, affordability, and ability to excel at a variety of distances ranging from the 5k to the marathon made it one of the best selling racing flats on the market.

In 2017 they released new colors but since then there has been no word of an 8th version. This has caused many loyal fans of the Hyper Speed to be concerned their favorite racing flat would soon be discontinued. However, we are here to reassure you that the Hyper Speed will continue to live on, only through another name, the ASICS Gel-451.

With the new Gel-451, you will get almost an identical midsole and outsole to the what you grew to love in the Hyper Speed 7. The only difference between the midsoles of the two models are the vents that were carved out of the midsole. While the vents in the Hyper Speed 7 went all the way through the midsole to reduce weight and enhance breathability, the vents in the 451 don’t go all the way through and are there mostly to reduce weight.

Additionally, the 451 uses the same full-length SpEVA midsole found on the Hyper Speed 7. SpEVA is a standard EVA mixed with a bouncy-ball-like rubber material. The EVA provides shock absorption while the bouncy ball material increases the rebound of the standard EVA by 20 percent. Furthermore, embedded within the heel of the SpEVA midsole is ASICS’ famous silicone-based gel that provides additional shock absorption upon impact.

To make their outsoles, ASICS starts with a rubber that is also used for car tires and mixes in a reinforcing material to make it more durable and thus longer lasting. AHAR, which stands for ASICS High Abrasion Rubber, is the most commonly used outsole material used on ASICS run specialty shoes and it resists abrasion about twice as much as their conventional rubber.

The ASICS Gel-451 features their AHARPLUS outsole material which resists abrasion about three times as much as their conventional rubber. To put it simply, the rubber found in the heel of the Gel-451 is the most durable rubber currently offered by ASICS.

Throughout the rest of the 451’s outsole, less durability is required so you will find a blown rubber which ASICS refers to as their DuraSponge outsole. Blown rubber is a rubber expanded or mixed with air during the production process. This creates a lighter, softer outsole that is less durable than its AHAR counterpart. Using blown rubber in the forefoot is common among shoe companies to reduce the weight of the shoe while offering a more bouncy ride.

The upper of the 451 uses a similar mesh to the Hyper Speed 7 but features a BOA®Fit System. The BOA®Fit System is made up of three parts: an instant release dial that allows you to tighten the fit of the shoe with a simple twist; lightweight and extremely strong laces; and low frictions guides that allow the laces to move freely within the system without getting caught. To add durability in key areas and reduce irritation, the upper of the 451 was finished off with seamless overlays.
