When you realize this, weight loss is the whole world becomes your oyster.”

I wanted to know how my body reacts to running to develop my form and learn from that. I wanted to take it further than I already was by trying long runs. D’Esposito of UCSD. “These findings are particularly exciting and important because running is a regular, pleasurable activity throughout the lifecycle. Whether you’re young, middle-aged, or in old age, if running gives you a sense of purpose and fulfillment in your life, it also helps reduce stress. Our study demonstrates that running is great for our well-being.”
To see if running made you happier, you and your colleagues had to run a 10K, 13K, and a half-marathon. The scientists didn’t just give the subjects an unlimited amount of exercise as the running is continuous; they measured the amount of running and then asked if it made them happier. All three subjects finished the course as happy as a long-term prisoner would at the end of a sentence from the results. The same test with the same amount of running had them as happy as a long-term prisoner would at the end of a month.
Running sessions improve satisfaction
In the long-term prisoners, it wasn’t even necessary to put them through continuous training. It was just enough to make them miserable for months while they suffered a terrible fate-the equivalent of being in solitary confinement.
The research didn’t stop with the question of whether running was as enjoyable as many runners believe it would be: When the researchers stopped the subject’s run to ask how they felt, most of them were surprised to hear that they felt happy and well satisfied. And while their happiness went from happy to sad, they remained satisfied with their lives after their running sessions.
After one year, the runners returned to the treadmill to complete another set of questionnaires and fill out their satisfaction surveys. Here’s what the scientists learned about the runners after running for one year:
Most of them would have considered themselves happy. They realized the most effective thing about running was that they didn’t feel so sad all the time. They even said, “I really don’t mind my run. I even enjoy it.” Running helps to free up the feelings of the depression, sadness, and anger that they experienced. Also, running helps them feel in control of their lives. At first, they did not like how their life ran: it was too hectic and too chaotic, and the job seemed to have too much pressure, and they felt tired and unmotivated.
But what was the cause of their unhappiness? The study showed that their unhappiness was a sign of depression. Most of the subjects complained of feeling tired and miserable because they were stressed out from their jobs and lives in general. However, unlike the long-term prisoners, they would have felt unhappy with their life in prison. These long-term athletes knew that their unhappiness was a sign.
